Romeos Choice

Romeo made an important choice about going to Capulet’s party because he saw Rosaline’s name on the list.

There are many possible reasons as to why he has done this, one is to prove Mercutio wrong about Rosaline (Mercutio stating that there are many far prettier women out in the world, with Romeo denying it) and another reason is that Romeo needed to get out of his slump, which was making act like a sulky teenager.

Romeo’s impulsiveness comes out in this choice because despite being a Montague and thus one of the Capulets enemies he still desides that it is worth risking his life (the Montagues and Capulets seem keen to fight each other at any given chance, see Act 1: Scene 1) to see Rosaline.

This impulsiveness is what leads him into the party and the consequence of that is Romeo and Juliets meeting and quick to follow love.

From Romeo and Juliet meeting (or rather from Romeo seeing Juliet) he immediately begins to wax compliments and praises about her (see Act 1: Scene 5) thus forgetting all about Rosaline, who was his main reason for being there in the first place.

Juliet also finds herself completely enamored with Romeo and the two seem destined for a future together.

But because Romeo is a Montauge and thus not welcome in the Capulets household of course when Tybalt finds out that Romeo is there at the party he immediatly wants to challenge him and force him out of his home. But Romeo is not forced out and he and Juliet meet properly.

This meeting and the spark between them is what convinces both of them that they should marry each other, but this will eventually lead to Romeos death as he cannot bear to live in a world where Juliet does not.
